FROM AUTOMATA TO ALGORITHMS - THE IDEA BEHIND ART ON ICE 2024
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) is currently at the centre of many discussions. Did you know that the first android prototypes were invented as early as 1770? The Swiss clockmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz built three so-called automata that could draw, write and make music. What started out as simple automata has now developed into artificial intelligence. Our production team was inspired by this exciting but also controversial topic.
We explore the complex relationship between humans and technology in a playful way. Ava, our fictional AI, will guide you through the evening and explain the messages of the songs and productions. Like any kind of artificial intelligence, Ava learns from what we teach her. Our knowledge, our dreams and desires are data in Ava’s world, which enhance her skills. During the show, Ava starts to ask herself the fundamental question of what these emotions are all about, as they seem to play a significant role in everything Ava sees. What do they mean? How do they feel? Even though Ava contains all human knowledge, she remains a stranger in the world of emotions.

Young Talents
To be part of the main Art on Ice show as a young talent? It’s the dream of many young talents. Now it’s possible, thanks to Art on Ice and AXA. Together, they have launched “Young Talents”, an initiative designed to promote young talent.
During a casting, the best Swiss skating talents are evaluated by a jury of professionals. The winners are invited to take part in Art on Ice shows.
“We’re giving future stars their first taste of performing in front of a big audience,” explains Sarah van Berkel, who heads up the Young Talents project for Art on Ice. The 2011 European champion will be offering valuable advice to the young talents.
